The Bamboo
Fund was created in 2003 to provide substantial
grants for social justice organizing groups in the Denver/Boulder
Metro area. Each year, Bamboo awards eight to ten grants,
ranging from $8000 to $12,000, for general operating purposes;
these grants account for approximately 90% of our annual budget.

our current and past recipients.) The remainder is available
for technical assistance to groups receiving a grant during
the regular cycle; other groups that do not receive regular
funding may be invited to apply for technical assistance for
organizational development or assessment purposes.

At the Bamboo Fund those terms apply to work
that addresses the root causes of oppression. We fund organizations
working for structural and systemic change, work that seeks
to alter the power dynamics of society, efforts that eventually
lead to long-term change. We owe a debt of gratitude and praise
to the Funding
Exchange, and in particular to the Chinook
Fund, for pioneering work and education in radical
philanthropy of this kind. Violence, poverty, inequality,
racism and classism, homophobia, ability/disability rights
— discrimination in all its guises; these are the issues
we hope to address. We welcome radical ideas and proposals
that imagine ground-breaking solutions to social problems
that arise from privilege and oppression.
Many people and organizations provide vital and invaluable
social service resources, (e.g., homeless shelters, arts programs
in underserved communities, food banks), thereby alleviating
the symptoms of social injustice and economic inequality.
The Bamboo Fund has made the decision not to fund direct services.
